Afteroom Lounge Chair
Founded and directed by Hung-Ming Chen and Chen-Yen Wei, the studio’s mission is simply to create beautiful products which will increase in value with the passage of time —design with which one can grow old.
The Taiwanese-born designing duo began their Stockholm-based design studio with the notion of creating modern objects that would only grow more beautiful over time. " Beyond their own work, they see their studio as a launching point for designers around the world who share their philosophy. The inspiration derives from an intriguing interest in forms, senses, proportions, materials and cultures. The thoughtful duo looks to the past as a route to the future, intending their products to grow as treasures, too take, their place for the next generation of designers.
Time passes and, Hung-Ming Chen and Chen-Yen Wei, that's just the point. The philosophy pivots around simplicity and honesty. The true essence of respecting wear and tear around the central idea of the passage of time.
"We always believed in a simple solution, bonded with good materials that show a human touch," they say. "Even though we know it is not a simple job to get to something really 'simple,' we still decided to try the idea out and our studio, Afteroom, was born." Continuing their quest across a diversity of cultures fuels their imagination, always guided by the founding tenets of true design.

The design embraces the challenge of aesthetics, without compromising on comfort. A study of unity between functionalism and minimalism, the Afteroom collection is the ultimate expression of a Bauhaus-inspired furniture series. It is a design cut back to the absolute necessities, yet it still operates as an integral part of overall space, adding strong, clean lines to multiple environments.
The beautifully minimal Afteroom Chair pays homage to functionalism and the Bauhaus school of art. A MENU bestseller since its launch in 2012, the chair is the work of Afteroom, a young Stockholm studio founded by designers Hung-Ming Chen and Chen-Yen Wei.
The first chair ever to be designed for MENU, the Afteroom Chair has been stripped back of any unnecessary components to reveal the essential functions of a chair in it’s most simplistic form. The quest for the perfect chair has possessed successive generations of designers.
The duo takes the series to a new level with Afteroom Chair Plus. Like the original, the chair is deconstructed and stripped of unnecessary components, with the additional feature of a wider backrest and a luxurious upholstering of both seat and backrest. The result is a blissfully simple chair that embraces minimalism and clean lines without compromising on comfort. The lounge chair came about by combining inspiration from two iconic chairs of early modernism: the ‘Thonet Bentwood Armchair’ by Michael Thonet and the ‘Spanish Chair’ by Børge Mogensen. The combination of these two classics resulted in something new – just as elegant as the Thonet and as comfortable as the Spanish Chair. The chair is not only a wonderful piece of design. It is also extremely comfortable and, moreover, provides you with a majestic posture.
The Afteroom Counter, Café and Bar tables are yet a supplement to the Afteroom Chair. The design pays homage to Bauhaus and functionalism combining minimalistic clean lines with good quality materials, to create an aesthetically stunning outcome. The tables come in three sizes, to complement the corresponding Afteroom Chairs, with a silk-smooth laminate finish for added luxury.
The collection is lightweight and, thus, easy to move around in the home, or office. With continuous extensions to the hugely popular line are bound to be embraced by those looking to enhance the seating in their commercial or residential spaces.
